Armed robber targets Saltdean Co-op

Armed robbers have made off with a cash box after targeting the Co-op store on Lustrells Vale in Saltdean around midday today (4th July).

A man, who was armed with a handgun, confronted two security guards as they delivered cash for the cash machine.

Another man drove a motorcycle onto the pavement and entered the shop armed with a crowbar.

Both men, who were wearing motorcycle helmets, left the scene after the female security officer inside the man activated an alarm as they attempted to gain access to the vehicle.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, which took place while a number of shoppers were in the area.

DS Julie Greenwood said:  “Although the security guards were threatened with a firearm they were not injured.  There were a number of people seen entering this store who we would like to trace along with anyone who saw a black motorcycle in the area being driven suspiciously with a rider and pillion passenger.

“The rider of the motorcycle was wearing a black sweat top and dark jogging bottoms and a black helmet.  The other man was dressed in jeans, a black jacket and wore a red and white motorcycle helmet.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 0845 60 70 999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting serial 771 of 4 July 2011.
