A post office in Bevendean has had its alcohol licence suspended after it was discovered to be selling fake vodka.
The Lower Bevendean Post Office on Leybourne Parade was found by Trading Standards officers to be selling fake Smirnoff and Glen’s Vodka.
Brighton and Hove’s Licensing Panel decided to suspend the licence of Tescho Limited for three months rather than revoke it as it was accepted the licence holder may not have been aware the alcohol was counterfeit.
The licence holder has been told to improve record keeping and undertake relevant training.
Councillor Ben Duncan, cabinet member for Communities, Equalities & Public Protection, said: “These bottles look professionally-produced rather than home-made and production of illicit vodka has become quite an industry. The best protection is to buy well-known labels from reputable stores, but anyone concerned that they may have been offered illegal alcohol should contact Consumer Direct on (0845) 404 0506.”
