Bogus caller claims to have lost his dog before stealing from 82-year-old

An 82-year-old man from Rottingdean was robbed yesterday (10th November) by a bogus caller that claimed to have lost his dog in the victim’s garden.

The victim was distracted by the first man at his home in Little Crescent, Rottingdean, at around 2.30pm while two other men entered his home and stole around £800 of jewellery that has been described as ‘irreplaceable’.

The suspects, who are described as white, in their mid-late 20s and were reading jeans and dark tops, ran from the scene after being caught by the victim.

Detective Sergeant Sally Hodges said: “The victim has been left shaken and is devastated to have lost the jewellery, some of which belonged to his grandparents and has great sentimental value. Detectives are in the early stages of investigation and are being assisted with house-to-house enquiries by PCSOs . Anyone who saw anything suspicious is urged to contact police.”

Anyone with information should contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 882 of 10/11 or anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
