Council choose to move skate park at the Level

The skatepark at the Level is to be repositioned as part of a £2.8m overhaul of the Brighton park.

Brighton and Hove City Council has confirmed its preferred option for redevelopment following a round of public consultation that saw local residents asked for their opinion on whether the skatepark should be moved north of the rose walk area.

Cllr Pete West, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, has approved the most popular option from the consultation which will see the skatepark moved to the north of the park. The redevelopment will also include new toilets, a café with indoor seating, a water fountain and the restoration of Rose Walk.

While this proposal proved the  most popular during the consultation the Friends of the Level are opposed to this option and have been campaigning against it (see picture).

The council will now formally apply for £2.1 million funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund through their Parks for People grant scheme.

The result will be announced in January 2012.

Cllr West said: “The Level is one of the most important parks in Brighton & Hove being in an area where many residents do not have gardens and on a major thoroughfare into the city.

“We carried out an unprecedented consultation exercise so that everyone had a good opportunity to be involved, share ideas and concerns, and help shape the proposals.”

He added: “We were delighted with the positive response to our consultation from residents, community groups and organisations, and I’d like to pay tribute to everyone involved in getting the project to this important final stage.

“Of course it’s impossible to please everyone but we have listened to the majority of residents who showed clear support for one of the options.

“I truly hope that despite individual reservations and preferences, that all members of public, community groups and civic associations will now join together in showing support for this bid, so that we might succeed in finally delivering a so long awaited and much needed bright new future for The Level.”

Yes. Isn’t it just great news indeed… The skaters will land up with half the size skate area they’ve got now (that’s IF they ever get their new skate park  -The council has messed up on this one so many times, and taken so few factors into account, that a ‘rebuild’ is looking less and less likely); the children will land up with half the amount of playground space they’ve enjoyed for the last hundred years; and the field will gain nothing more than a concrete island surrounded by a high fence, and a bunch of plants.
