Council pledges to save Saltdean Lido

Brighton and Hove City Council’s new Green administration have vowed to maintain the fight to save Saltdean Lido amidst growing frustration at the management of the Grade II* listed pool.

The attraction recently had its listed status improved which looked likely to save the site from being developed into a block of flats, which had been proposed by the current leaseholder.

However, its sporadic opening has frustrated residents and visitors and led to a well-supported petition urging the council to intervene and help save the lido.

The Green-led administration will continue to hold negotiations with the leaseholder and is looking to avoid potentially costly legal battles over the historic pool.

Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, who is cabinet member for culture, recreation and tourism, said: “The council shares everyone’s passion for the Lido.

“The argument is not about whether we save it – we all agree that we must.  The debate is about how best to do it.
“Going through the courts will be expensive, slow and, ultimately, may not work.

“The situation is very complex and we have a duty to be legally fair to everyone, including the current leaseholder.  However, we are determined to work with all those involved to protect and enhance the Lido for the future.”
