Ditchling Road café owner fined after ants found in dirty kitchen

The owner of a café on Ditchling Road has been fined after pleading guilty to four charges relating to the poor hygiene of Lix café.

The health of customers was put at risk by the state of the kitchen in the café and it was found that the owner, Huw Evans, 44, had failed to follow a raft of hygiene laws and regulations.

During a search of the property, which is based a short distance from London Road, in May, council inspectors found a dirty freezer and dishwasher and a microwave that appeared not to have been cleaned for some time.

There were also holes in the kitchen wall, which had flaking plaster and paint, while oil covered cobwebs were on the ceiling and ants were found crawling over syrup bottles.

Mr Evans, who could not produce the required Safer Food Better Business manual or written food safety procedure, was ordered to pay a total of £1,283 in fines and court costs.

Councillor Ben Duncan, Cabinet Member for Communities and Community Safety, said: “A great deal of the Food Safety team’s time is dedicated to working with businesses to protect public health, and on occasions such as this, when their advice is ignored, they rightly take tough action.

“Regular inspections by council officers will continue to ensure that businesses found flouting the food hygiene laws be prevented from taking their customers’ health in vain in their search for a fast buck.”
