Green Party leader Caroline Lucas says her party offered Brighton and Hove a ‘positive and progressive alternative’ and the city has ‘welcomed it’.

The Brighton Pavilion MP was speaking after the Greens finished as the largest party on Brighton and Hove City Council, which is the first time the party has made such an achievement in the United Kingdom.

The success follows her own triumph in becoming the first Green MP and Ms Lucas says it is testament to the scale of support her party has in the city and she has promised to reward their support by getting ‘the best possible deal for Brighton and Hove’.

She said: “This is a fantastic result. I am delighted that the voters of Brighton and Hove have once again made history, by voting in the Greens as the largest party on the council. The fact that we held all our seats and gained 10 – with a total of 23 – shows more than ever the scale of Green support in the city. We have offered people a positive and progressive alternative to the older political parties, and they have welcomed it.

“Our councillors are determined to get the best possible deal for Brighton and Hove in these difficult times. And with all the results in, now is the moment for Greens to reach out to the many different groups – community organisations, businesses, unions and others – and local residents so that together, we can find the best solutions for this great city.”

Green Party Convenor Bill Randall added: “The the city has listened to the Greens and we have listened to the city.

“Greens will now sit down and plan how to take the city forward in these difficult times.

“This is the first time the Greens have been the largest party on any council in the UK and people seem to be genuinely enthused by the option of a Green-led council.

“We now have 23 Green councillors, making us the largest Green group of councillors in the country.

“The next step is for us to talk to other parties about how we will work with them and implement our manifesto pledges at a very challenging time for local government budgets.

“We can’t say how this will work until we have entered into discussions.”
