Update:
Sussex Police has now determined that the incident reported below is not suspicious after it was clarified that the man did not touch the girl or talk to her.
DS Duncan Elliott said: “The incident is no longer being treated as suspicious but police would still like to speak to anyone who has further information. I would like to emphasise that the girl did the right thing in reporting the incident.”
An 11-year-old schoolgirl was touched on the top of her head by a man in what police are describing as a ‘suspicious incident’ in Hangleton this morning.
The youngster was on her way to school when she was approached by the man, believed to be about 50-years-old, at 8am while she was walking in Hangleton Way at the junction with Hardwick Road.
After being touched by the man the girl ran away and turned to see the man sitting on the ground. He then turned and walked away.
DS Duncan Elliott said: “We do not know what were the intentions of the man but the girl was confused and shaken by being approached.
“Detectives are appealing for any witnesses that may have seen this man who is described as white, aged about 50 years old, of medium build with grey hair and unkempt appearance, to contact police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting serial 299 5/9/11.”
The incident follows a string of suspicious incidents in Brighton and Hove in recent months.
