The March for England has concluded peacefully following a march through the city centre this afternoon.
Some 300 people were involved in the events, which resulted in a large police presence in the city as the group marched from Brighton Station to Victoria Gardens in close proximity to a counter-protest.
Eight people have been arrested for public order offences by Sussex Police, who used a helicopter to monitor those involved during the day. Three were arrested before the march began at 12.30pm for failing to remain in the designated protest site.
The breakdown of those arrested is as follows:
It is not known of which group those arrested were affiliated with, but the counter-protest has been criticised by police for their failure to engage with authorities.
Superintendent Steve Whitton said: “I am pleased with how the policing of today’s protest marches has gone. Having had dialogue with the organisers of March of England in the run up to today’s demonstrations enabled us to establish their intentions which were adhered to and in turn minimilised disruption to the city. Unfortunatley the counter-protesters did not engage with us and therefore it was necessary to have support from neighbouring police forces and British Transport Police.
“The Sussex Police helicopter played a crucial role in the policing of today’s demonstration and counter-demonstration, helping to provide a safe environment for both protesters and the public. The camera on the helicopter provided a unique view not only of the protest, but wider area, helping to keep traffic moving and minimise disruption in the city for residents, visitors and businesses. Police will continue to maintain a visible presence in the city this evening.”
The pictures below posted by Sussex Police shows March for England supporters in Surrey Street ahead of the start of the march and a counter-protest group who have gathered at Brighton Station.
Ahead of the march Sussex Police’s Superintendent Steve Whitton warned those involved that the force would be firm but fair in their attempt to ensure people have the right to protest peacefully.
He said: “Finally, I would like to reiterate that Sussex Police’s role is to maintain the peace whilst allowing lawful protest, minimising disruption to the city, local communities and businesses, preventing crime and disorder and providing a safe and secure environment for the protestors and the surrounding community.
“I am concerned that there will be people who attend this event whose intention is not to peacefully protest and whose behaviour will go beyond that which is acceptable. The policing response will be firm but fair as I don’t want those who protest peacefully and within the law to be disproportionately affected by those who do not.”
