Knifeman leaves Western Road shop empty handed

A man armed with a kitchen knife threatened a shop assistant at a newsagents on Western Road, but left the store empty handed.

The incident in Hove took place yesterday evening (21st February) at around 6.20pm when the suspect entered the shop and demanded money.

However, the suspect, who is described as white, around 21, 5’9″, and of medium build, left Associates Newsagents empty handed and headed into Brunswick Place.

He was wearing a grey hoodie, dark jeans, dirty trainers and had a dark blue scarf around his face.

Police suspect the incident may be linked to another attempted robbery at the shop earlier this month.

Detective Sergeant Chris Sherwell of Brighton and Hove CID: “This was a very unpleasant experience for the member of staff, who fortunately was not injured but nonetheless is very shaken up. There were no customers in the store at the time of the incident.

“The suspect was in the store around ten minutes beforehand and was hanging around outside before he went inside and threatened the shop owner, who was on his own.

“We believe this incident may be linked to another attempted robbery at the same shop on 1st February.

“Officers are viewing CCTV and making inquiries locally. I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information regarding the suspect to please call 101 quoting serial 1345 of 21/2 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
