Rat poison risk uncovered at Hove kebab shop

Rat poison was found on food preparation areas at a kebab shop in Hove.

Environmental health inspectors uncovered an ‘appalling breach of the food hygiene regulations’ at the Golden Grill outlet on Western Road and owner Ladan Hadavi has had to pay out more than £2500 as a result.

Hadavi admitted 16 charges of breaching food hygiene regulations and had to pay £2,595 in fines and court costs.

Rat poison was discovered in food preparation areas, in the kitchen and storerooms, while the floor, walls and equipment were found to be filthy.

Inspectors found cooked rice left uncovered at room temperature for several hours and no records of food safety checks were kept.

There was also an inadequate supply of soap in the staff toilet.

However, despite the breaches the kebab shop has allowed to continue to operate and the council has stated that hygiene standards have significantly improved.

Councillor Ben Duncan, Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities and Public Protection, said: “This was an appalling breach of the food hygiene regulations, and customers’ health was clearly put at risk.

“Fortunately most food outlets in the city are reputable and well run, but when standards drop, this council will act swiftly to take appropriate action to protect public health.”

’We are building on the success of our ‘Scores on the Doors Scheme’ for publicising the food hygiene standards by launching on the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.”
