Sites to be considered for new junior school classes in Hove

A number of sites are to be considered as potential homes for much-needed new junior school classes in Hove.

Brighton and Hove City Council‘s cabinet are expected to give education officials the go-ahead to explore five options for three new junior school classes in Hove.

The sites are Hove Park Depot, Hove Park Upper School, land at BHASVIC, land behind Leicester Villas that is currently used as playing fields and Hove Police Station, which is expected to be vacated early next year.

The first four sites have previously been investigated during an earlier exploration of suitable sites. This search identified the Connaught Centre in Hove, which is now used for junior school places in Hove.

Hove and Portslade has been described as being a ‘ticking timebomb’ with demand for school places tipped to outweigh supply.

The council is to also consider negotiating with St Nicolas CE Junior School with the view of expanding the Portslade school to be made up of four forms rather than two.

Under the plans, which will be debated by the cabinet later this month, St Peter’s Infant School could also have the age range increased from 4-7 to 4-11 by purchasing an adjacent industrial unit to allow the school to expanded.

Council leader Bill Randall said: “Governors and headteachers across the city are acutely aware of the intense pressure the city faces for extra school places. We want to work constructively with them to deliver the extra places for local families that our city needs.

“The opening of the Connaught Annexe in Hove under the management of West Hove Infant School has been a stunning success, and we are also due to consider making this a permanent arrangement.”
