Over 1,000 Brighton residents turned out at a public meeting in opposition to the possibility of Happy Valley in Woodingdean being used as a permanent or tolerated site for travellers.
The meeting was organised by Conservative MP for the area Simon Kirby and was attended by Woodingdean councillor Geoff Wells and Hove MP Mike Weatherley.
Woodingdean Community Centre was packed to capacity for the meeting on Friday, which Mr Kirby feels should send a message to the council on the strength of the opposition to travellers being allowed to use Happy Valley.
Brighton and Hove City Council has pledged to find a permanent location for travellers in the city, but has not publicly suggested Happy Valley is in the running.
Simon Kirby said: “The huge numbers of residents who turned up should send a clear message to Brighton and Hove City Council about the strength of local feeling on this issue. It is clear that Happy Valley would be a completely inappropriate site for a permanent or tolerated traveller’s site and I hope the Council will listen to the wishes of local people.
“The message to the Council could not be any clearer, no permanent or tolerated traveller site at Happy Valley. There are far more appropriate locations elsewhere in the City.”
