Popular Kemp Town cafe is granted licence

Metrodeco, a Parisian-style art deco cafe in Kemptown, has been granted a licence to serve alcohol.

The application was approved by Brighton and Hove City Council at a licensing meeting on Monday and means the cafe is licensed until 9.30pm (9pm on a Sunday).

The licence was granted despite a number of letters of objection, including one from Green councillor Ben Duncan, who said ‘it will cause disturbance and noise nuisance in a residential area’.

Suggestions from the councillor in his letter of objection that police had been called to Metrodeco was dismissed as a ‘falsehood’ in a follow up letter from Michael Taggart to the council’s planning department.

Helen Wilkinson, co-owner of Metrodeco, said: “We have always wanted to bring a little of 1930s Parisian cafe culture to Brighton and we can now really do this.

“Metrodeco will be for people who don’t necessarily want the hustle and bustle of pub or bar. It will be for those who’d prefer a civilised glass of wine, cocktail or liqueur with lunch or in the early evening in convivial surroundings.

“Tea and cake will, of course, continue to be the backbone of our business and Metrodeco will still be as much about its two floors of art deco furniture as its cafe.”

Metrodeco, which also sells Art Deco furniture from its basement, can be found on 38 Upper St James’s Street.
