A man has died this morning (6th November) in a fire at a block of flats on Bristol Gardens in Whitehawk.
Mark Rivers, 52, is believed to have died as a result of smoke inhalation and was declared dead at the scene shortly after 6am.
East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Sussex Police are working together on the investigation, which is on-going, but at this stage the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
Borough Commander Mark Rist said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman who died.
“Sadly, at this time of year our accidental house fires tend to rise, if you would like us to visit you, check your property and offer assistance please call us on 0800 1777 069. We are particularly targeting our resources at those who may be most vulnerable should a fire start in your home, such as elderly members of our community living alone.”
