Police officer assaulted after breaking up fight

A police officer was assaulted in the early hours of Wednesday morning after stepping in to break up a fight in the Old Steine area of Brighton.

Shortly before 4.30am the officer spotted a fight between three men from his patrol car and after he called an ambulance for one of the men the other two turned on him.

Officers arrived at the scene to assist and all three men were arrested, one of whom had been chased and one had to be treated for a head injury at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

A 21-year-old man from Cricklewood, London, was arrested on suspicion of ABH and a racially aggravated public order offence, which occurred after he had been arrested. He was released on bail until 28th July.

A 19-year-old man from Falmer was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and was bailed until 29th July and another Falmer man, also aged 19, was arrested on suspicion of affray and has been bailed until 21st July.
