Protests against council to be held at Hove Town Hall today

Two protests are planned to take place at Hove Town Hall this afternoon, which is likely to result in disruption in the area.

Van drivers have been urged to take part in a one-hour protest outside the town hall on Norton Road to express anger at planned rises to the cost of parking in the city.

The protests, which have been partly organised by Elliott Raggio from the On Tap Group, are to begin at 2.30pm when traders are expected to converge on the area.

The action is in response to council plans to increase the cost of business parking permits and traders parking permits in Brighton and Hove.

Mr Raggio is behind a pressure group called Traders Need Transport and he is to speak at Hove Town Hall later this afternoon when councillors meet for a Full Council Meeting.

A statement by TNT said: “Your tradesman and businesses are about to suffer due to Green Party parking and permit price proposals. Did you know the price is going up from £175.00 to £480 per annum for each vehicle? Traders permits are going from £350 to £750 -£800 per annum per van.

“For those of you that do not have permits: did you know some of the pay and display machines prices are going up? To park for two hours, currently costing £2.20, is going up to £6 – that’s 170%! This will have a negative impact on your business and your customers.

“The high price hike is using businesses and the public and turning them into a cash cow for the council, but the good news is we can stop this!”

Hove MP Mike Weatherley has urged the public to join in with the protest.

A second protest group called ‘Traders Against Parking Persecution’ are also planning action this afternoon.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
