Concern for horses after “spiked” fruit thrown in field

There is concern horses may have suffered internal injuries after “spiked” apples were thrown in their field in Rottindean.

Police are investigating after the horse owner found more than 15 apples, which had dressmaker pins and two-inch screws and nails pushed into them, lying in a field in Whiteway Lane, Rottingdean on Saturday 18 September at around 11am.

Some of the apples had been half eaten but it is not yet known if any of the nine horses have suffered injuries as a result of this mindless act.

A police spokesman said: “This is an alarming incident. PCSOs are carrying out house-to-house inquiries to see if anyone has seen anything and to check if there is a history of any problems in the area.”
