Saltdean Lido decision expected soon

The future of the Saltdean Lido is expected to be known soon with English Heritage set to announce if the Art Deco lido will be upgraded to Grade II* status.

The lido was built in 1937 and already has Grade II listing status, but in March 2010 it was at risk of closure after plans emerged to turn the site into a block of some 100 flats.

A strong local campaign was launched to save the lido, which is owned by Brighton and Hove City Council, and moves from English Heritage to reclassify its listed status would go a long way to ensuring its long-term future.

The Save Saltdean Lido campaign website has revealed that a decision is due soon, while Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby has also said that news is imminent.

Mr Kirby, who had written to English Heritage to press for the listing, said: “I hope the news is good and we are expecting to hear very soon. I have passed on this information to the constituents I who have been working with. I am hoping the listing will be made and we can move forward on that basis with the Lido.’”
