A teenager fought off an attacker in an alleyway near Preston Street during the early hours of Thursday morning (29th December).
The 18-year-old local woman was walking home following a night out in Brighton and having made her way from East Street to Churchill Square, via North Street, she walked down the alleyway that links Russell Square with Regency Square at around 1.45am when she was attacked.
The suspect, who is described as black, 30-year-old, 6′ and of medium to strong build, punched the girl in the face, but the victim managed to get away by kicking her attacker, who was last seen heading into Regency Square towards the seafront.
The attacker was bald and clean shaven and was wearing a white t-shirt, a dark jacket and trousers. He is believed to have a South African accent.
Detective Sergeant Chris Sherwell from Brighton and Hove CID said: “This was obviously a frightening experience for the young woman who was just walking home after a night out in town. Brighton CID are investigating the attack and are providing her with all the support and help she needs.
“Officers have been patrolling the area and conducting ongoing enquiries to find the man.
“We would like to hear from anyone as a matter of urgency who witnessed the attack or saw or heard anything suspicious between midnight and 2am this morning (29 December). Please call 101 quoting serial 87 of 29/12.”
