Brighton-born DJ Kenny Hawkes has died following an illness, it has been confirmed this evening.
The legend of House music, who grew up in the city and often returned to perform, is regarded as having been a pioneering influence on dance music in Britain during the eighties.
Tributes have been pouring in on Twitter during the day with the death of Mr Hawkes coming as a surprise to many.
DJ Carl Cox said: “Lost a very dear friend today, you will never be forgotten, RIP.”
Fellow music producer Funk D’Void said “RIP Kenny Hawkes, you will be missed my friend” and Felix Da Housecat wrote “Another Great Friend and Amazing Person and Dj. Kenny Hawkes Rest in Peace Brotha..Very sad day..U def will b Missed (sigh)”
He is best known for his Play the Game record with Louise Carver, which was released in 2003 and can be heard in the YouTube clip below.
