Brighton charity wins battle with X Factor

Brighton charity Rhythmix has won its battle with X Factor over a girl band competing in the contest with the same name.

The group will now change its name after the charity threatened legal action against Simon Cowell’s Simco company, which had applied to trademark ‘Rhythmix’ in Europe.

The charity, which uses music to help disadvantaged youngsters in the South East and is said to be one of the largest music charities in the UK, has ‘Rhythmix’ trademarked for educational purposes and it is believed those behind the X Factor felt this would not prevent the group from continuing to use the same name.

However, a concerted campaign by the charity to highlight the ‘moral implications’ of the affect on them from having a band with the same name has led to a change of heart by X Factor producers.

Earlier today an open letter to Simon Cowell was published by Rhythmix chief executive Mark Davyd on Facebook, which read: “A large number of the public reading this will see it for exactly what it is; a ridiculously overblown storm in a tiny teacup. Simco are solely responsible for that situation and you can resolve it in a matter of seconds.

“For that reason, Simon, we are personally asking you to sort this problem out in the quickest and simplest way: Just change the name.”

The letter has been ‘liked’ by almost 3,000 people in less than 12 hours.

This led to a statement from the X Factor team, which read: “At the request of the charity Rhythmix, the members of the girl group Rhythmix have decided to change their name, a decision which has the support of Syco and TalkbackTHAMES.

“The group’s new name will be announced in due course.”
