Portslade Infant School confirm expansion plans

Portslade Infant School will become a two-form all-through primary school for children aged 4-11 for the school year starting September 2013.

The expansion is part of a wider shake-up of junior and primary school places in Portslade, where existing schools have been coming close to being unable to meet the demand for places from families in the area.

The proposal to expand Portslade Infant School, St Nicolas CE Junior School and St Peter’s Infant School was approved by Brighton and Hove City Council this week following a consultation process.

The headteacher at Portslade Infant School has spoken of her delight at the changes and said it is an ‘exciting time’ to be at the school.

The changes mean that 60 of the current Year 1 pupils (currently 120) will be able to stay on in to Year 3 through to Year 6, while from September 2013 the school will also take 60 children into its Reception. The remaining pupils currently in Year 1 will be able to move to the expanded St Nicholas school or go elsewhere.

Dawn Oliver, Portslade Infant school headteacher said: “This is great news for our pupils and our school. We have a thriving school with a nurturing and friendly environment and will now be able to extend this right across our pupils’ primary education.

“We will be able to build on the excellent relationships that we have with parents and carers for a further four years and it will be less disruptive for the children. It’s an exciting time to be at Portslade Infant school.”

In order for St Peter’s to become an all-through Primary School it is expected to require a site adjacent to the school to provide extra capacity.

Ahead of this week’s council meeting, which backed the plans ahead of a further public consultation, council leader Bill Randall said: “I’m really pleased that these schools have been so supportive of our vision for providing local school places for local children.”
