Caroline Lucas to meet students at Freshers’ Fairs

Brighton’s influx of new students are to get the chance to meet Caroline Lucas at the university’s freshers’ fairs next week.

The Green Party leader and Brighton Pavilion MP is due to attend both the University of Sussex and University of Brighton‘s fairs, which is a key part of the student’s first week in a new city.

Caroline Lucas MP said: “I very much look forward to coming along to the Freshers’ Fairs – it’s a great opportunity for new and returning students to engage with the work of the council and to learn more about what the Greens are doing for the city.”

The Green Party are to have a stall at both events and it will be manned by Hollingdean and Stanmer councillors Christina Summers and Sven Rufus, who will be telling youngsters about what the party, which currently controls the council, has planned for the coming months.

Cllr Rufus said: “Many freshers will be living and studying in the local area, and during this exciting time they don’t realise the role they can play in local democracy. They are residents as much as anyone else and we are here to listen to what they have to say.

“We want to make sure they know how to access and use local services. And as Green ward councillors, we want to help foster relationships between different communities, building on the work done by colleagues in Hanover & Elm Grove over the last few years.”

Cllr Summers added: “It’s clear from having met with USSU and university officials that there’s huge potential for an exciting new relationship between the university, its students, and the city council.

“We want to bridge the gap between the council and the university, particularly getting students’ input on local issues and developments such as the improvements to Lewes Road.”

The University of Sussex Freshers’ Fair takes place around Falmer House on Monday 26th September, while the Brighton event is held at the Racecourse on Freshfield Road on Wednesday 28th September.
