Council to decide on student halls development

Brighton and Hove City Council will this week decide whether to grant permission to the University of Sussex to build three new halls of residences at their campus in Falmer.

The proposal will create a much-needed 180 additional bedrooms of accommodation for students, but the ‘Northfield’ development site falls partly within the borders of the South Downs National Park and also within Stanmer Park and Gardens, although no buildings are to be built within these borders.

However, the council’s planning officers are minded to grant planning permission to the three-storey development, which would be located adjacent to the existing Lewes Court halls of residence. They state additional student housing is ‘required within the City’ and the development will have a ‘negligible impact on the South Downs National Park and will preserve strategic views and the character of the surrounding location’.

The South Downs National Park authority has not objected to the application, but has asked for a section 106 order requiring landscaping and biodiversity enhancements to be included as a planning condition.
