Three charged over conspiracy to steal £2m from Sussex Uni

Three men have been charged with conspiring to steal more than £2million from the University of Sussex.

The men are alleged to have been involved in the unlawful diversion of £2,036,616 which the university was paying as part-payment for contracted work on the new student accommodation.

The money, which was diverted to a completely unrelated account in October 2010, was restored to the University’s accounts soon after.

Gurdip Singh, 36, Hamel Bakriana, 35, of Campbell Avenue, Thurmaston, Leicester, and Imtiaz Valli, 43, of Caledonian Road, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, are due to appear on bail at Leicester Magistrates Court on Tuesday 10th January.

The prosecution follows an investigation by Sussex Police‘s Major Fraud Unit, which worked in co-operation with the East Midlands Regional Asset Recovery Team.
