University of Sussex shortlisted for top award

The University of Sussex has been shortlisted for ‘University of the Year’ in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards.

The University, which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, is competing with Dundee, Edge Hill, Nottingham, Sheffield and Southampton universities for the accolade.

The shortlisted universities will be judged on particularly bold, imaginative and innovative initiatives, as well as their strong research, teaching, access and business performance.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Farthing said: “This is fabulous news for everyone at Sussex as we enter our 50th anniversary year. It is a tremendous tribute to the hard work of the staff and students, which has led to widespread recognition of the University as an excellent place to work and to study.”

The university has boasted a rise in undergraduate applications of over 50 per cent in two years, while it has enjoyed climbs in various university league tables and is now 7th in the National Student Survey 2010.

In the last year, 25 new professors have been appointed, reflecting the University’s commitment to investment in areas of academic strength and innovation, especially in the sciences.

The Times Higher Education Awards 2011 will be announced on 24th November.
