The organisers of the Brighton Half Marathon have admitted the competitors ran more than 500 metres further than they should have done as a result of human error.
A number of runners who used training devices alerted race organisers that they’d ran further than the standard 13.1 miles for a half marathon.
The Brighton Half Marathon, which is in its 22nd year, is a licensed course and the error was as a result of the turnaround marker between mile four and five having been misplaced, meaning the competitors ran a total of 13.42 miles
The Race Director said: “We take full responsibility for this human error and would like to issue our most sincere apologies to all the runners who experienced disappointment over this. We have taken all feedback into account, we will be implementing some new additional measures ready for the 2013 race to prevent this from happening again.”
The race had been a success with a record 7,427 runners taking part.
The organisers have amended the results on the Brighton Half Marathon website in order to take the extra distance into account.
