Social media use leads to increase Christmas tree recycling

The use of social media by Brighton and Hove City Council is believed to have led to an increase in the number of Christmas trees that has been recycled in the city.

The volume of discarded trees gathered at the city’s 27 recycling points was up by 20% on last year’s total.

The trees could fill 1,665 cubic metres, which is the equivalent of 16 double decker buses.

Brighton and Hove City Council used Twitter and Facebook to advertise the availability of the recycling points.

Councillor Pete West, the Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “We are delighted so many people took their trees to our collection points to be recycled and would like to thank them for doing so. The trees will now be recycled and used for wood chippings, compost and soil improvers.”
