A youth advice centre which provides information on sexual health, drugs and alcohol for youngsters in East Brighton has been saved after receiving financial support from the council and local NHS.
Safe+Sorted is a voluntary organisation run by the Sussex Central YMCa and relies on fundraising. It recently received a donation from Bradley Reback on the Channel 4 show ‘Secret Millionaire’ and has now been provided funding to see it through to the end of the current financial year.
David Standing, Chief Executive of Sussex Central YMCA said: “We are delighted that the funding has been found to keep ‘Safe+Sorted’ open till the end of the financial year.
“We really appreciate the efforts of the council and the local primary care trust in helping to find a way forward to ensure this service can continue to meet the needs of young people in Moulsecoomb.”
Safe+Sorted is based at the 67 Centre on Hodshrove Lane in Moulescoomb and is open Monday-Thursday from 1pm to 6pm.
It was recently praised by Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas, who said: “Safe and Sorted also does a fantastic job in providing vital assistance to young people, getting them into work and helping them to lead independent lives – with very little in the way of funding or resources.”
Dr Tom Scanlon, Director of Public Health for Brighton and Hove said: “This service provides a safe space for young people to get information about sexual health, drugs and alcohol, and other issues which affect their lives. This funding will help young people in East Brighton get the vital support they need.”
Cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Sue Shanks, added: “Safe+Sorted’ has given valuable support to young people in East Brighton and we have good evidence of its impact on the lives of its target group in East Brighton.
“We are delighted that the service can continue thanks to joint support from us and the local primary care trust and will be working with the YMCA to look for a way to ensure its long term future.”
