Green Party leader and parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion, Caroline Lucas, and her Conservative rival, Charlotte Vere, have been involved in a new Twitter clash on the subject of desertion.
Vere took offence at Lucas for acknowledging the British Legion’s thanks for supporting them, as the MEP is also a vocal supporter of deserter Lance Corporal Joe Glenton and supports pacifist principles
Lucas stated on Twitter: “British Legion have thanked me for signing their pledge earlier this week. I see no contradiction bet. that & supporting Corp. Joe Glenton.”
However, in a Twitter post this morning Vere said she was “appalled by @carolinelucas support for deserters”.
In a consequent clash with Twitter user @garydunion she said: “If @carolinelucas is a pacifist and supports deserters, she has no place ‘supporting’ British Legion. Shame on her.”
She later added that “there is no place in Armed Forces for desertion” and supporting it was “irresponsible”.
Last year Charlotte Vere was involved in a controversial Twitter post which saw her ‘retweet’ a website that connected the Green Party with the Blackshirts. This can be explained here.
It is clear that this issue is one that Vere feels strongly about, as will many others in and out of the armed forces. However, it remains to be seen if voters, especially those that are opposed to the current conflicts our armed forces are involved in, will take issue with her strong opinion on desertion, which she seems to flatly opposes regardless of individual circumstance.
