Hove MP slams police attempt to ‘re-write history’ of summer riots

Hove’s MP has accused some police authorities of attempting to ‘re-write history’ in relation to the riots of summer 2011.

Mike Weatherley‘s criticism follows news that the disturbances are being classified by some police authorities as ‘violent disorder’ rather than ‘riots’, which means businesses are finding they are not eligible to compensation.

This is despite the Government’s pledge that all claims under the Riot (Damages) Act 1866 will be underwritten to help businesses.

Mr Weatherley, who is Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Retail & Business Crime, has written to the Minister of Police, Nick Herbert MP, to voice his disappointment at the situation.

He has followed it up by questioning the minister in Parliament earlier this week during which he challenged his colleague to ‘compel these authorities to revisit their decision’.

Weatherley explained: “Given the importance of this matter, I felt that an urgent question was the best way to highlight this matter to the Minister and the House. Sadly it appears that there exists a shocking and ongoing attempt by some Police Authorities to re-write history and say the riots of last August were merely incidents of ‘violent disorder’ rather than rioting. This leaves businesses around the country out of pocket.”
