Hove MP Mike Weatherley is to meet culture secretary Jeremy Hunt to make the case for Brighton and Hove to be included in the government’s plans to invest £100m on the country’s broadband infrastructure.
At present the locations eligible to bid for funding are limited to London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast as the ten largest other cities in the UK.
Brighton and Hove just misses out on this list, but local figures, including the city’s other MPs Caroline Lucas and Simon Kirby, have campaigned that high speed broadband would have an enormous impact on the city given its status as a digital and media hot-spot.
Mr Weatherley wrote to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport and fellow Conservative, Jeremy Hunt, on the issue and is due to meet the minister tomorrow (25th January).
The MP for Hove and Portslade said: “I look forward to putting the case forward tomorrow to Jeremy in person that Brighton & Hove deserves special dispensation in this case. Investment in high-speed broadband would have an enormous impact on our local economy and be a huge boost to the plethora of creative and media companies that we are fortunate to have in our city.”
