Mr Kirby ended Labour’s dominance in Brighton Kemptown with 38% of the vote, finishing 1328 votes ahead of Labour’s Simon Burgess.

He had been selected as the Conservative candidate for Brighton Kemptown in 2006 when known as Simon Radford-Kirby. He later decided to drop the Radford, although has denied that he did so under pressure from David Cameron.

Simon Kirby has previously been an elected councillor on Brighton and Hove City Council, Mid Sussex District Council and East Sussex County Council. He was instrumental in the creation of independent radio station Juice 107.2 and is the co-founder of the C-Side pub and restaurant chain.

In 2000, the Kirbys suffered the tragic death of their 15-month-old child, Dillon, who drowned in an accident at the family home in Hurstpierpoint.
