Media focus on Brighton Pavilion continues

The media attention on the Brighton Pavilion election campaign shows no signs of abating as this week both Reuters and the Economist have profiled the constituency.

The interest is partly due to the front-runners being solely made up of women, but it is mainly due to the prospect of Green Party leader Caroline Lucas winning a seat in parliament.

Lucas is challenged by Conservative candidate Charlotte Vere and Labour’s Nancy Platts for what is becoming one of the most interesting seats in the country.

Reuters ask ‘Could English seaside voters go Green?’ and paint the “once seedy town” as a location ready to make more than just a protest vote. Read the feature here.

The Economist meanwhile deal with ‘why the Green breakthrough may finally have come’ in their feature that largely focuses on Dr Lucas. Read this article here.

tory candidate Vere has also focused on Lucas in her campaign, even though Brighton Pavilion is currently Labour. On her Twitter feed (@CharlotteV) she had this to say following the Economist article.

“Hilarious reporting from the Economist – I am not “furious” nor “glum” + as all Greens know, I think they r ‘eco-Marxist’ not ‘eco-fascist’,” said Vere.
