Labour councillor warns against ‘Tory Death Tax’

Labour’s lead councillor for Brighton and Hove Gill Mitchell has spoken out against the potential ‘death tax’ imposed on families after a relative passes away.

The plan from the Coalition Government is to enforce local authorities to impose a charge on families of between £130 and £170 to check the cause of death of their loved ones.

Cllr Mitchell has criticised the tax, which is outlined in the Health and Social Care Bill, as being unfair on ‘hard-hit grieving families’ and also on the council for being the body needed to collect the money.

She said: “This new Tory death tax, introduced as part of the already incredibly unpopular Health & Social Care Bill, will not only hit Brighton & Hove City Council hard, but will place extra undue stress on hard-hit grieving families.

“By forcing councils to collect this tax, the Government seem to be passing the buck, potentially allowing Brighton & Hove City Council to be painted as the bad guys in doing the Tory-led Government’s dirty work.”
