Labour urge council to remove Coldean travellers immediately

The travellers encamped near Varley Halls in Coldean Lane should be removed immediately, according to Labour councillors for Hollingdean & Stanmer.

Councillors Pat Hawkes, Jeane Lepper and Christine Simpson have blasted the Conservative-led council for failing to take action despite spending taxpayers money on legal action to enforce the removal of the new age travellers.

The trio have acted on complaints from local residents at the ‘noise and unsightliness of the camp, which lost its appeal to stay at Brighton County Court nearly three weeks ago.

Hollingdean & Stanmer Labour Councillor, Pat Hawkes, said: “Three weeks ago we thought we had our community back, but the travellers are still here. Why are the council not doing anything about it?”

Cllr Pat Hawkes

“This beautiful open space is valued by the people of Coldean and I have collected dozens of witness statements from residents complaining about this unauthorised encampment. There is noise nuisance and there is fly-tipping. Quite frankly it is antisocial to be that close to homes and not care about or respect people.

“We have written to the Council’s Chief Executive urging him to take action and remove this unauthorised camp immediately. Not only is this delay deeply unpleasant for local residents, but it is simply a waste of taxpayers money to pay for legal action which doesn’t get used.”
