A former Liberal Democrat council candidate has switched sides to Labour to help their campaign team ahead of local elections in May.
Ellen Woolley of Phoenix Rise in Brighton stood in Hanover and Elm Grove for the Lib Dems in 2007, but after Nick Clegg ‘broke his promise’ she has switched allegiances.
She said: “Nick Clegg could have afforded to be honest to the young people he spoke to. But instead, he made a pledge and broke his promise. If you promise something to young people you should keep it. My family went on the big march – they all feel let down.
“Thanks to Labour, disabled people have had some chance of a social life through day centres, but now they risk being cut off. It’s hurting people, but at the poorest end.
“Labour stands a better chance of convincing people there’s an alternative. The government went racing ahead with reforms to the NHS, but now they are beginning to come unstuck.”
Woolley is assisting Tracey Hill, Leo Barraclough and David Speirs in Hanover and Elm Grove.
Tracey Hill said: “All over the ward we are talking to people who have made the decision to come back to Labour. Ellen does a lot of work in the community and has seen first hand the benefits Labour has brought. We’re delighted that she will be helping us with our campaign.”
