Albion are considering expanding new stadium

Brighton and Hove Albion are yet to kick a ball in their new stadium, but the club is already considering increasing its capacity.

The Seagulls will start this season in their long-awaited American Express Community Stadium in Falmer, but after a huge demand for tickets, the club, which won promotion to the Championship last season, are exploring the option of adding more seats.

Any expansion to the 22,000-seater stadium would require a fresh planning application and as a result the club have urged supporters to follow their advice on travelling to their new home in order to minimalise disruption and convince authorities the site could handle yet more traffic.

It is understood any future expansion would see a further tier being added to the East Stand and the stadium capacity could be increased to 30,000.

In a letter to the club’s season ticket holders, Chief Executive Ken Brown said: “Please help us when travelling to and from the stadium.”

He added: “Due to the huge demand for tickets we are considering putting in a planning application for extra seats – so it is important we make the stadium run as smoothly as possible in all aspects and, in particular, travel.”

Supporters are urged not to attempt to drive to the stadium on match days and a number of park-and-ride systems will be in place, but for those who insist on using their vehicles they must pre-book for parking at the University of Sussex.
