Albion hit for six at Anfield as fortune favours Liverpool

Brighton and Hove Albion’s players scored four goals at Anfield this afternoon, although sadly for the Seagulls three of these goals were put into their own net during a 6-1 humbling by the Premiership outfit.

The scoreline flattered the home side somewhat as Gus Poyet’s side endured a second half to forget as comedy defending and incredible bad luck conspired to extinguish any hope of a famous giant killing.

Albion were in the fifth round of the FA Cup thanks to a 1-0 win at home to Newcastle United in the last round and for much of the first half it looked as if the Seagulls would be a test for another top division outfit.

However, the match didn’t start well for the visitors with defender Martin Skrtel giving Liverpool a fifth minute lead with a close range header.

Brighton responded bravely and Kazenga LuaLua enjoyed a moment to savour by levelling the scores from 25-yards.

Liam Bridcutt unfortunately deflected a Steven Gerrard shot past his own keeper with half time approaching and in the second half it was a one-sided affair with Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez scoring either side of two more own goals, again from Bridcutt and also from Lewis Dunk with a hopelessly inopportune attempt at keepy-uppy.

Suarez also had time to miss a penalty as the visitors lost their heads.

For Brighton, the focus is now on finishing in the play-off positions in the Championship.
