Residents complain about football parking in Coldean

Residents in Coldean have complained about the ‘chaos’ in their streets caused by football supporters parking in the area before games at the American Express Community Stadium.

Local residents reported cars parked on grass verges, in front of driveways and on double yellow lines before recent Brighton and Hove Albion matches in their new stadium.

During the construction of the 20,000 stadium in Falmer, residents were told measures would be put in place to avoid problem parking, but locals said there were no signs advising motorists against parking in the area.

Parking at the Amex is heavily restricted with the club promoting the use of park and ride schemes, while parking is available at the University of Sussex, although this has to be pre-booked.

Labour councillor for Coldean, Jeane Lepper, has urged the club to address the situation.

She said: ”Residents in Coldean are very angry about this and I have been inundated with complaints, especially from around Park Road, Park Close and Rushlake Road, where last night, vehicles were parked all over the grass verges, in front of driveways on double yellow lines and in many cases double parked.

“There were no signs warning that parking was for residents only and no sign of a steward. Local people were prevented from reaching their own properties and those that were in them could not leave. Emergency vehicles would not have been able to gain access.

“During the construction of the new stadium local councillors were assured that measures would be in place to prevent situations like this from occurring. That’s why I’m urging Brighton & Hove Albion to take action and nip this problem in the bud.”
