The Argus’ owner Newsquest appears unwilling to reconsider its controversial intention to move the paper’s sub-editors to Southampton.
Staff from Brighton and Hove’s only daily newspaper have today started the second of their two-day strikes in response to Newsquest’s running of the paper, which has resulted in numerous redundancies and a lengthy pay freeze.
Journalists from the Southern Daily Echo are also on strike and staff from the paper have declared what appears an unacceptably low level of pay for what is an important and challenging profession.
Argus staff have also explained on their blog that Newsquest are “not prepared to enter into pay negotiations” despite having recently announced healthy profits.
The blog also claims Newsquest, which is itself owned by Gannett, that the loss of sub-editors to Southampton, from where the paper is now printed, is “irreversible”.
