The Argus journalists are to strike again this week

Journalists from The Argus in Brighton are expected to go on a third two-day strike later this week in protest at the recent relocation of the paper’s sub-editing department to Southampton.

The journalists are also angry at their continued pay freeze while Gannett, the parent company of Newsquest, which operates The Argus and other local titles, report healthy profits.

Their compatriots at Southampton’s Southern Daily Echo are also going on strike this week, although there has been speculation that a two per cent pay rise to editorial staff is in the offing, although this may do little to appease the long-suffering staff given the 20 per cent increase awarded to Newsquest chief executive Paul Davidson in 2009.

News of the latest strike action was reported by Brighton and Hove News, which is run by former Argus deputy editor Frank Le Duc, and it quotes an unnamed member’s concern for the damage being done to the paper by Newsquest’s failure to support local jobs.

The fury of the sub-editors’ relocation to Southampton took on an element of farce as on the first day the paper was printed with the opening line ‘A Brighten graduate….

The strikers have set up a blog on which they explain the reasons for their action and ask for support from their readers.
