The Argus journalists to strike for a second time

Journalists from Brighton and Hove’s Argus newspaper have voted to strike for a second time in protest at plans to move the sub-editors to a regional hub in Southampton.

The new round of action will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (7th and 8th December).

The ‘Keep the Argus Local’ campaign saw the paper’s NUJ members take a two day strike earlier this month to put pressure on their American owners Newsquest, who have been accused of showing a disregard for the intelligence of the paper’s readers with their cost cutting measures imposed on staff in recent years.

The anger has been fueled by reports that Newsquest and their parent company Gannett have been boasting of healthy profits at a time where Argus stuff have been forced to endure a three-year pay freeze and seen staffing levels cut to a bare minimum.

The latest strike action was revealed by Brighton and Hove News, which is run by former deputy editor at The Argus Frank Le Duc, who wrote this fantastic summary of the situation for Jon Slattery last week.

The strikers have used Facebook, Twitter and a blog to drum up support for their plight and have received words of encouragement from all of Brighton and Hove’s MPs and council leaders.
